Your Route to Becoming an ADI – Approved Driving Instructor

In order to charge for driving lessons you must be an Approved Driving Instructor – ADI.

The minimum age is 21 and there’s no upper age limit. You must have no more than 5 points on your licence. Following a DBS background check, the qualifying exam consists of three separate tests: Theory, Driving and Instructional Ability.
On average, it takes about six months to qualify but there are many factors that can affect the timescale.

Spoiler Alert: It’s not easy to qualify and it takes hard work, lots of study and dedication. If you’re not prepared to do that then it’s probably not for you.

If you are prepared to work hard, study and dedicate yourself to qualifying, then read on…

At a Glance | The Three Parts of the ADI Qualifying Exam are:

Part 1 | Theory Test

• A multiple choice question test – pass mark 85/100

• Hazard Perception Test – pass park 57/75

Unlimited attempts.

Once you pass the above Theory Test you can apply for Part 2

Part 2 | Test of Your Driving Technique

This is an advanced driving test comprising: an eyesight test, reading a number plate at 27m, answering five tell me /show me questions. Three tell me questions at the start and two show me questions on the move. You’ll be asked to demonstrate two out of four reversing exercises, follow a sat nav, or road signs for 20 minutes, and possibly an emergency stop [requested on one in three tests].

Limited to three attempts.

Your general driving ability will be tested.

You’ll have to demonstrate all of the following:

  • expert handling of the controls
  • use of correct road procedure
  • anticipation of the actions of other road users and then taking appropriate action
  • sound judgement of distance, speed and timing
  • consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users
  • driving in an environmentally-friendly manner

You’ll drive in varying road and traffic conditions, including motorways or dual carriageways where possible.

You’ll be expected to drive as an experienced driver, not a learner. Think about it this way: learner drivers have all of the correct techniques, but limited experience. Experienced drivers have all the experience but limited use, if any, of the correct techniques.
As an ADI your driving will be a blend of the two: experience and correct use of the techniques.

Once you pass the above Driving Test you can apply for Part 3

Part 3 | Instructional Ability Test

This is a test of your instructional ability.

Limited to three attempts.

You’ll be observed on a 45-minute lesson with the examiner in the back of the car.

The pass mark is 31/51 {with a minimum of 8/15 in the Risk Management section] assessed over three key skill areas comprising  17 competencies.

Your pupil can be of any standard, but cannot be an ADI.

Once you pass the above Instructional Ability Test you can apply for your name to be entered on the register of Approved Driving Instructors. You’ll then be issued with your certificate, usually referred to as the ‘Green Badge’ which must be displayed in the windscreen of your car when you’re charging for driving lessons.

Timescale: all three parts must legally be completed within two years of passing Part 1. The average time taken is six months but there are many factors involved: how much time you’re prepared to devote to studying and working hard, whether you pass first time, and, crucially, the waiting time for tests.

Please Note: there are are extensive waiting times – currently 3-6 months – for all DVSA tests and this can seriously impact the time it takes you to qualify, so factor this in.
